Active Shooter Response

HVPD Supports "Avoid, Deny, Defend" Campaign

HVPD supports the AVOID, DENY, DEFEND campaign from the ALERRT Center at Texas State University.  Its purpose is to educate the public on how to respond during an active shooter event or violent confrontation.   The 11 minute video encourages citizens to evaluate the situation and:

AVOID - If it is safe for them to do so, employees should exit the facility immediately to AVOID the shooters.

DENY - If employees are unable to safely exit the facility, they should lock themselves in their current location and barricade the door to DENY the shooters' access.

DEFEND - In the event that employees are unable to utilize the AVOID and DENY strategies successfully, they should DEFEND themselves using whatever means are available.

When law enforcement arrives, remain calm and follow instructions. Keep your hands visible at all times. Avoid pointing or yelling. Know that help for the injured is on its way.

If you See Something, Say Something - Call 911 and Remember AVOID, DENY, DEFEND!
