Police Department Volunteer Opportunities

HVPD is excited about your interest in serving your community. Without volunteers we would not have been able to achieve our status as the safest community in North Texas.

In our Volunteer Opportunities section, you will find information on the following programs:

HIRING AND PROMOTION BOARDS

When HVPD hires a new recruit or promotes an officer to a new position we utilize a board of co-workers, superiors and most importantly, citizens to determine which candidate will best meet the needs of our community.

Because of our department's size we do not know when the next hiring or promotion boards will be held, but if you are interested in serving on one, please send an email to hvpd@highlandvillage.org and someone will get back with you shortly to discuss the program.

 POLICE AUXILIARY

Highland Village Police Auxiliary members are a dedicated group of civilian volunteers that assist the Highland Village Police Department in a variety of activities concerning the safety, security and welfare of Highland Village residents. They are an important element of the community policing activities of the department.

Auxiliary members meet periodically and have their own operational command structure reporting to the Police Field Operations Division Commander. They are trained to assist the department at special events and other support related activities.

Primary responsibilities include:

Police Chaplain Program - Clergy volunteer to assist the police department in providing ministry and counseling to victims of violence, crime, or abuse, as appropriate. Police Chaplains aid members of the department in law enforcement situations requiring the assistance of a religious professional. They are also available to department personnel to provide the benefits of spiritual care, counseling and guidance.

Student Intern Program - The Highland Village Police Department accepts criminal justice student internships from local area colleges and universities. Students learn police operations first hand and provide volunteer assistance. Students may be awarded academic credit upon successful completion of the internship.

 VOLUNTEERS IN PATROL (VIP)

Having as many "eyes and ears" is a key part of the solution to achieving a low crime rate. One of way we achieve this is through an extension of our Police Auxiliary program called "Volunteers in Patrol" (VIP).

What do we do?

Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) are members of the Police Auxiliary who undergo additional training so that they may assist on-duty police officers with their patrols of the community.

VIP members are assigned to specific areas where crime has been reported and they report to on-duty police officers any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities. VIP members may also take with them a hand-held radar unit once they have completed the necessary training program.

This program is a force multiplier and creates additional police-related presence within the community.

VIP members drive a patrol car that has been redesigned with the VIP logo on it and is equipped with a yellow light bar and a police radio. This vehicle is easily viewed by citizens and clearly shows the VIPs as designated representatives of the Police Department.

What training do I need?

Prior to participation, each Auxiliary member must complete an eight-hour training course.
