Police Patrol

Deployment

It is our policy to have a minimum staff of four (4) patrol officers on-duty at all times. Now you might ask yourself - is an minimum of four officers enough, or perhaps too many.

The answer to both questions can be "yes."

On weekdays six or more uniformed officers in Administration and Investigations are available to respond to calls. This is during the daytime when most residents are at work. Thus, the department operates with fewer patrol officers.

In the evenings, our patrol staff increases to as many as six officers. This is when most residents are at home, thus more officers are needed on the streets.

This deployment strategy maximizes our presence during the time of day when our statistics show we have an increase in calls for service while maintaining a smaller staffing level during those times when calls are minimal.

VEHICLES

The Highland Village Police Department operates 23 vehicles that allow us to patrol all areas of the city using both Police Officers and Volunteers.

Our vehicles are state-of-the-art and equipped with the tools that allow us to operate in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

 PATROL VEHICLES

Highland Village Patrol Vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment that allows our officers to perform their duties in an efficient and effective manner. When a vehicle has reached 100,000 miles it is replaced which helps keep overall maintenance costs low for our fleet.

Some of the equipment we utilize includes:

 COMMAND VEHICLE

In 2005, the Police Department acquired a Ford Expedition for use as a field command vehicle. This vehicle is equipped with the same state-of-the-art equipment that is in our patrol vehicles. On a day-to-day basis, this vehicle is routinely driven by the Patrol Sergeant on duty.

What makes this vehicle unique is the capability it has to turn in to a Mobile Command Station if needed. This vehicle is equipped with an extendable canopy and stocked with supplies such as additional radios, a thermal-imaging unit, and more. These added features are usually deployed in situations that require full force participation such as a missing child.

 VIP VEHICLE

The VIP Vehicle is essentially a patrol car that has been redesigned with the VIP logo on it and equipped with a yellow light bar and police radio. This vehicle is easily viewed by citizens and clearly shows that the Volunteers In Patrol are designated representatives of the Police Department.

For more information on becoming a Volunteer in Patrol, visit our Volunteer Opportunities page.

 POLICE BICYCLES

The department has six (6) patrol bicycles which are used by specially trained bike officers and Police Auxiliary members. These bicycles are specifically designed for use in patrol activities. They all have strobe lights on the front and a bag for storage of necessary patrol equipment.

You can watch for bike patrol officers and volunteers in the neighborhoods, on the trails, in the retail shopping areas and in the parks during all of our special events.

 PATROL GOLF CARTS

In order to serve the safety and security needs of the new City Inland Trail System, the Highland Village Police Department recently acquired special patrol golf carts.

The carts will enable police officers and police auxiliary personnel to patrol areas not easily accessible by other means.

Look for the new carts out on the trails, shopping centers and at special events.

MOTORIZED SCOOTERS

After the City enacted an ordinance regulating the use of motorized scooters in the City, the Police Department purchased two scooters to facilitate the new required scooter training.

These scooters have been very helpful in the quarterly scooter trainings as well as in the parks during special events.

OFFICER EQUIPMENT

Highland Village Police Officers are well equipped to handle any situation they may encounter.
This includes hostile subjects or an injured person.

Issued Officer Equipment:

Other Equipment

First Aid Kit - Officers are also trained in the use of an extensive first aid kit, which is carried in each police vehicle. Police officers arrive at most medical calls in Highland Village before an ambulance.

Less-Than-Lethal Devices

The Police Department has two of each of these items and they are used as part of our Use of Force Continuum. It is our goal as officers to avoid lethal action if at all possible. The equipment we have to assist in this goal is:

Pepperball Launchers - These non- lethal weapons systems fire a paintball type pellet that is filled with pepper spray.

Tasers - These non-lethal weapons will fire small dart-like electrodes with attached metal wires that connect to the gun, propelled by small gas charges.
