First Read of an Ordinance Prohibiting the use of Hand-held Mobile Telephones in Active School Zones is Approved

Back To News

At the April 22 meeting, Council approved the first read of an ordinance prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile telephones in active school zones. The Police Department conducted a survey of mobile phone use in Highland Village school zones and found usage at approximately 10%. Using hand-held cell phones in active school zones is a distraction while driving. School zones demand the constant attention of the driver in order to ensure the safety of children, pedestrians and bicyclists. The ban will be effective for the 2008-2009 school year, with education and awareness targeted for the summer months. A grace period will be instituted to encourage familiarity and compliance with the new ordinance.

During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt informed residents of the Spring Clean Up scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Copperas Branch Park. The Clean Up includes lawn and yard clippings, hazardous waste, electronic waste and paper shredding. Detailed information is available on the city web site.

Mr. Leavitt also announced the grand opening celebration for the new Central Fire Station, scheduled for May 1 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The new station is located at 1200 Highland Village Road.
