At the January 25 meeting, Council approved a resolution for the Veterans Memorial policy. The Highland Village Veterans Memorial was funded and built by the City adjacent to the existing Veterans Monument and designed to recognize individual Veterans. The approved policy designates the Memorial will recognize a) Veterans who gave his/her life in the line of duty while serving in the military and was or had been a Highland Village resident; b) Veterans who gave his/her life in the line of duty while serving in the military and have family who are currently Highland Village residents; c) Retired military Veterans who were Highland Village residents at the time of their death. The city will fund memorial recognition for those who meet the first criteria; the other two will be funded by the family of the applicant.
The Council appointed Deputy City Secretary Diane Callahan as Interim City Secretary until the City Secretary position is filled. Current City Secretary, Alicia Richardson, has accepted the City Secretary position with the City of Southlake.
During the Mayor Report, Mayor Scott McDearmont presented Jack Milligan with the Mayor Citizen Award. Lt. Col. Chaplain, Ret. Jack R. Milligan is a Highland Village resident and has served as the Highland Village Police Chaplain. “The Mayors Citizen Award was created to recognize service above self and leadership by example. I can think of few who embody these qualities better than Jack Milligan. I congratulate Jack and thank him for his years of volunteer service to our nation and Highland Village," stated Mayor McDearmont.
Mayor McDearmont also recognized Highland Village employee Jesse Acevedo Mr. Acevedo is retiring from the City of Highland Village after 25 years of service. Mr. Acevedo, fondly known as “Chief” by Highland Village residents, was thanked for his excellent customer service and dedication to Highland Village.
During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt informed residents of the Father & Daughter Dance scheduled for February 4. Registration is required and can now be done online at www.hvparks.com or in person at The Robert & Lee DuVall Center located at 948B Highland Village Road.
