Scott Kriston reports that the TXDOT FM 2499 section 4 project contractor is finishing the concrete coping walls, cut outs, sidewalks, added storm water inlets and driveway connections on the north bound outside lane as weather permits.  The contractor is mowing the r.o.w. as weather permits.  The contractor is preparing to redefine some offsite drainage areas where easements were obtained during the design process.  The contractor is constructing the Northwood / FM 2499 intersection, they anticipate approximately 4 weeks to build, weather permitting.  Most of the work is taking place on the Corinth side of the project now.

Highland Village Fire Personnel responded to a structure fire on Memorial Day where a 4th grader was home alone when a kettle caught on fire and he called 9-1-1.  His family moved to Highland Village from England and, after the incident, decided it would be a good idea to visit the Fire Station to learn more about Fire Safety tips.

Police:

This week, the police department responded to 131 calls for service, made 183 traffic contacts, made 9 arrests, responded to 1 traffic accident and performed 396 community policing activities.

Senior Animal Care Officer Michelle Burke was able to find forever homes for several of our residents this week.  "Finley" (the cat) had been with us since January and "Bella" was received from another shelter in trade. 

The Animal Care Unit received a half a pallet full of food and supplies from Wal-Mart this week.  Target also donated several items to us for the animals. Thanks Wal-Mart and Target!  We also received a $1000 donation from the Highland Village Rotary to assist with medical treatment and general care of the shelter animals.  Thanks Rotary!  We also received a donation of $100 to assist in the care of the animals, which was was part of a wedding present for one of her neighbors.  These types of donations assist in allowing us to have animals spay/neutered before they are adopted. 

The Police Department conducted a deployment at Copperas Branch Park for the Memorial Day holiday. 

Corporal April Roppolo issued one hundred and forty 5th Graders at Heritage Elementary School for the work with the Safety Patrol program.  Mayor McDearmont and Police Chief Ed O'Bara helped to hand out HVPD Merit Awards to all of these students.  Lieutenant Karl Schlichter and Corporal Greg Arrington were also in attendance.

Lieutenant Karl Schlichter and Captain Mark Stewart attended the final planning meeting for this year's Red White and Blue festival.

Captain Corry Blount met with the Captains from Flower Mound Police Department and Lewisville Police Department.

Corporal Doug Bell and Sergeant Sheri Morrison attended a Preventing Sexual Harassment refresher course.  This course was on make-up because they were out of town on training when the class was originally scheduled.

Captain Mark Stewart and Chief Ed O'Bara met with the Corps of Engineers to discuss lake patrols in the Highland Village area. The Police Department received approval from the Lake Lewisville Corps of Engineers allowing assigned HVPD officers to "ride-out" (on a limited basis) with Lake Rangers on select days/times.  The purpose of the ride-outs is to address safety/security and nuisance violations occurring within the Highland Village City limits on the lake.  Most mentioned include noise ordinance violations (unreasonable noise), alcohol, indecency, and unsafe boat operation in coves by Remington.

The Police Department conducted our annual radar equipment certification.  This certification is verified through an outside company.

 

STREET / UTILITY DIVISIONS PROJECTS

Streets:

The Street Division continued with painting of crosswalks,stop bars and school zones.  This will be an ongoing project.

The Street crew made asphalt street repairs on Big Elm Street due deterioration of the asphalt.

The Street Division assisted the Parks Department in signage for parking, including directional arrows, off site parking, closures, parking locations and set up the area  for parking.

Utilities:

Scott Kriston reports that the MSC project mason is working on the stone work for the PWB & REC buildings. The window contractor is installing the store front windows on the PWB & REC buildings.  The millwork contractor is installing the cabinets in the REC building.  The dry wall & painting contractors are working inside the PWB, EQU & STO buildings.  The electrical & duct work rough is being installed in the PWB.  The dirt contractor is installing sod around the site perimeter and removing the erosion control.  

Scott Kriston met with BW2 Engineering , Inc. & discussed the status of all open Public Works projects.

Scott Kriston held a pre-constrcution meeting this week for the Oak St well lot site improvements project.  The contractor is anticipated to begin painting the tank mid June.  The contract is for 120 calendar days.

Angela McClure started this week as the Utilities Administrative Assistant.  She replaced Gay Durden.  Angela has many years of experience in the administrative field and will be a valuable asset to the Utilities Division.  Please welcome her to the City when you see her around.

The Drainage Division took delivery of a new full matrix message board this week.  This sign will be deployed all over the City to help educate the public on local environmental issues. 

Utility Crews:

  • Installed intrusion detection on the Idlewild fill valve vault.
  • Assisted the Parks Dept. with overnight stage security at Copperas Park.
  • TV inspected two sewer mains to check for areas in need of repair and manhole locations.
  • Washed and painted 26 fire hydrants as part of the fire hydrant maintenance program and ISO requirements.
  • Flushed 12,455 linier feet of sewer mains.
  • Excavated and repaired a water leak on Karen Renee Ct.
  • Replaced a broken 3" water meter at LA Fitness.
  • Located and raised two manholes that were buried.
  • Responded to two after hour call outs.
  • Unstopped one sewer backup on Winding Creek.
  • Performed meter rereads, water turn on/turn offs, and leak checks.
  • Performed maintenance on well lots, lift stations, fire hydrants and the water distribution and wastewater collection system.

Drainage Crews:

  • Redefined the drainage swale  in the 300 block of Karen Renee.
  • Cleaned debris from the curb inlet box in the 500 block of Doubletree.  
  • Cleaned debris from the drainage easement to establish proper flow in the 100 block of Nowlin.
  • Met with resident on flooding issues from the Inland Trail in the 300 block of Lake vista.
  • Shot grade in the 300 block of Whittier for bar ditch redefining.

PARKS DEPARTMENT

Parks staff has been preparing for the Red, White and Blue Festival this Saturday. We hope that everyone can come out to enjoy the music, food and fireworks.

Senior All Stars

The Highland Village Senior All Stars met on Monday (15 attendees) and Thursday (38 attendees) for game day. 

Twelve Senior All Stars met on Tuesday for open game time.

On Wednesday, 15 Highland Village Senior All Stars met for Book Club at Barnes and Noble.

HUMAN RESOURCES / STAFF TRAINING

Fire:

  • Assistant Chief Collier attended the monthly Fire Instructors of North Texas (FIANT) meeting that was held in Grapevine on Wednesday.
  • Assistant Chief Collier attended the Denton County Working Managers Group meeting on Thursday.

Human Resources:

  • Martha Butz, Jana Onstead and Jane Ponder held orientation for Angela McClure our new Utilities Admin.  We are glad to have her on board.
  • On Thursday "Preventing Sexual Harassment" training was held at City Hall for 21 employees.  The presenter was Mike Gibson from SGR.  This training is provided for new employees and a refresher course for existing employees.
