Council Approves Resolution for Memorial Recognition of Highland Village Veterans

Back To News

At the March 27 meeting, Council approved a resolution creating a policy for memorial recognition of Highland Village veterans. The veteran memorials are planned for the landscaped area adjacent to the inland trail and the Veterans monument located on the Municipal Complex grounds. The city will fund the memorial which will consist of a bronze star plaque placed on stones. A Highland Village resident must apply for the memorial recognition on behalf of the deceased veterans.

The Council toured the new Municipal Service Center and Robert & Lee DuVall Community Center which are currently under construction. The Centers will provide the needed space for both our field crews and community programs such as the Senior All-Stars. The facilities are expected to be completed and open in late summer of this year.

"These Centers are two of the most aesthetically pleasing, extremely functional facilities I have seen in a municipality. These structures will stand the test of time as well as provide the much needed space to house city equipment; staff offices for Parks and Recreation and Utilities as well as a completely equipped Community Center that the residents will be proud to call their own,” stated Mayor Dianne Costa.

During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt invited residents to attend the annual Spring Clean Up on Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Copperas Branch Park. This event is an opportunity for residents to dispose of household hazardous waste, electronic waste, batteries and paper to be shredded along with tree and lawn clippings. This is for Highland Village residents only so proof of residency is required. Details on what can and can’t be accepted at this clean up are available on the city web site. Rain out date is Saturday, May 8 with notification of cancellation provided on the city web site.

During the Mayor’s presentations, Mayor Costa presented the President’s Volunteer Service Awards to Police Auxiliary members Ken Morgan, Mike MacLean, Steve Jones, Paul Scholz, Dick Williams, Jim Conrad, Mike McCoy and Don Guzzardo.  The award recognizes individuals for a service standard measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period.

Mayor Costa also presented the Mayor’s Citizen Award to Excite! Gym and Cheer. Julie Hutchens and Liz Bracker were there to accept the award. Mayor Costa recognized Excite! for their involvement in the recent Sue Weaver C.A.U.S.E. Dancing with the Mayors fundraiser. Julie Hutchens, her staff and students volunteered their time to give the Mayor’s dance lessons and provide dance partners for the event.
