Council Considers an Ordinance Amending the City’s Comprehensive Plan

Back To News

At the August 28 meeting, Council held a public hearing and considered an ordinance amending the city’s Comprehensive Plan related to the Future Land Use Map to include Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The Mayor and Council voted to postpone the item to the next Council meeting. At this meeting on September 11 this item will be included in the early work session to allow presentations explaining TOD’s and how they pertain to Highland Village.

Council approved a resolution calling a bond election on November 6 for the Municipal Service Center and an interim Senior Center at 948 Highland Village Road. The current service center is made up of modular buildings that are over 20 years old. The current Fire Station would be renovated to include a façade consistent with other municipal facilities and an interior designed to accommodate senior programming. The two propositions total $5M with no impact to the current tax rate.

Also at this meeting, Council held a public hearing on the proposed FY 2007-2008 budget. The proposed budget will go up by about 17 percent, from $9.4 million this year to $11 million in fiscal 2007-08. Council also confirmed the needed growth in public safety with the funding of additional four staff members to the city Fire Department and one to the Police Department. Continuing with the public safety priority, Council also approved improved security cameras at Unity Park, and continued funding for the Children’s Advocacy Center. The security cameras at Unity Park will tie into the current security camera system in place at The Marketplace at Highland Village and will provide an additional presence at the City’s busiest park. The Proposed budget is available on the City web site.

During the Mayor’s Announcements, CoServ presented the Fire Department a check for $25,000 for an All Terrain Vehicle for Fire and EMS response on the Inland Trail System. The Fire Department submitted a proposal through the CoServ Foundation Operation Round Up. The ATV will be equipped with EMS and wild land fire suppression equipment.
