At the September 26 meeting, Council approved the final read of the FY 2007-2008 budget. The budget will go up by about 17 percent, from $9.4 million this year to $11 million in fiscal 2007-08. Council also confirmed the needed growth in public safety with the funding of additional four staff members to the city Fire Department and one to the Police Department. Continuing with the public safety priority, Council also approved improved security cameras at Unity Park, and continued funding for the Children’s Advocacy Center. The security cameras at Unity Park will tie into the current security camera system in place at The Marketplace at Highland Village and will provide an additional presence at the City’s busiest park. The Proposed budget is available on the City web site.
Also at this meeting Council approved the second and final read of an ordinance adjusting the City’s rates for water and sewer service. The City underwent an extensive audit of the current rate system. The audit revealed an immediate need to increase the City’s water and sewer rates in order to continue our current level of service. An 18% increase will be reflected on the utility bills sent to subscribers in November.
Council also approved the preliminary plat for the St. James Place Subdivision located in the northwestern portion of the city, north of Castlewood Boulevard and west of the future FM 2499. Council approved the plat in conjunction with the recommendations of Planning & Zoning and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to manage the preservation or removal of trees on a lot by lot basis.
A resolution was approved authorizing the City Manager to enter into an agreement with GCG Advertising for the design of the city logo. City staff will work with the Media Communications Committee and GCG in the research and design process of a new city logo reflective of the community. GCG will also provide a graphics standard manual and a web site template to be used in the re-design of the city web site. The city will implement the new logo through a phased in approach.
Council approved a resolution appointing members to the City boards, commissions and committees.
