Council Denies Second Read of Smoking Ordinance

At the October 27 meeting, Council voted on the second read of an ordinance amending Chapter 50 of the City’s Code of Ordinances as it relates to smoking. The amendment was denied on the second read by a vote of 4-3. The amendment would have prohibited smoking at  any public building or public service area of any public facility owned, operated or managed by the city, including, but not limited to public parks, trails, playgrounds, recreation fields, restrooms, concession stands and any seating or observation areas abutting or immediately adjacent thereto, or within fifteen feet (15’) of an entrance or exit to public buildings.  Council directed staff to include this item for discussion at the November 10 Council meeting.

Council approved a resolution authorizing the City Manager to award an engineering construction contract to Ratcliff Constructors for construction services for the Municipal Service Center and Interim Senior Center for an amount not to exceed $3,737,500.  In November 2007 a General Obligation Bond was approved by voters for a Municipal Service Center and Recreation Facilities including an Interim Senior Center meeting facility at

948 Highland Village Road
. Construction will begin at the site in mid-November.

 

During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt invited residents and local Veterans to attend the 7th Annual Salute Our Veterans Luncheon on November 10. The Highland Village Business Association holds the lunch to honor our Veterans. Sponsorships are requested from local businesses and residents to pay for the lunch of the Veterans in attendance. Congressman Michael Burgess also presents Congressional Commendation awards to local nominated Veterans. Those interested in sponsoring a Veterans lunch should contact the city at 972-899-5091.

Mr. Leavitt also informed residents of road construction which will close the eastbound lanes of

Highland Shores Boulevard
from
Briarhill Boulevard
to
Highland Village Road
and the 2700 block of
Hillside Drive
. Construction will begin November 3 and, weather permitting, finish in approximately three weeks. Eastbound traffic on
Highland Shores Boulevard
will be detoured to FM 407 via
Briarhill Boulevard
and/or
Village Parkway
(FM 2499).

During the Mayor’s comments, Mayor Dianne Costa recognized Officer April Roppolo for receiving the Heroes of Denton County Award. Officer Roppolo received the “Career Achievement Award”. This award is the first of its type authorized by the organization and was based of the department’s nomination and letters of support from the public.
