The weekly TXDOT FM 2499 project meeting was canceled this week.  The project status is as follows:  The contractor continues to perform concrete pours of the bridge spans on the north side of the lake water level for the Poindexter bridge.  They will continue to pour concrete spans next week starting at 6 a.m.  The pours are expected to last 10 hours each.  The contractor poured concrete on the FM 2499 lanes and is prepping the intersections for concrete.  The cut outs and intersections are anticipated to be poured next week.

PUBLIC SAFETY (POLICE AND FIRE)

Last week the Police Department responded to 159 calls for service, made 74 traffic contacts, made 4 arrests, responded to 3 traffic accidents and performed 927 community policing activities.

This week the Police Department responded to 178 calls for service, made 35 traffic contacts, made 5 arrests, responded to 2 traffic accidents and performed 907 community policing activities.

Corporal David Harney and Corporal April Roppolo put on a special three hour Drug Awareness Class for fifteen Cub Scouts at the police department on Tuesday.

Highland Village Fire Department responded to 22 calls for service the week of July 3rd - 9th. This includes: 8 medical emergencies, 3 public service calls, 1 structure fire, 1 fill-in, 1 odor investigation, 3 public assists, 1 residential fire alarm, 1 motor vehicle accident, 2 commercial fire alarms, and 1 grass/brush fire call.

STREET / UTILITY DIVISIONS PROJECTS

Streets:

The Street Division trimmed up the trees that were hanging over Highland Village Road. This was done to prevent damage to high profile vehicles traveling down Highland Village Road.

The Street Division made repairs to the asphalt street and repaired some concrete curb and gutter on Malibu Drive. The street crew will continue to make repairs to the asphalt street through next week on Malibu Drive.

Scott Kriston & David Clark met with BW2 Engineers to discuss the 2008 manhole restoration project.  The engineers are submitting plan sheets for review, Scott & David are making review comments.

Utility Crews:

  • Repaired four water line leaks.
  • Rebuilt a broken check valve at Lift station two.
  • Assisted the maintenance department with repair of the skid steer.
  • Responded to eight after hour call outs.
  • Repainted three fire hydrants.
  • Performed meter rereads, water turn on/turn offs, and leak checks.
  • Located five areas of utility infrastructure for proposed Franchise utility work.
  • TV inspected one sewer line and made necessary repairs.
  • Installed seven new water meters.
  • Planted 25 yards of St. Augustine sod as part of the dressing up process from water & sewer main repairs.
  • Performed shut down and start up of the Southwood well lot 3 times during the construction of the 84-inch casing pipe crossing FM 2499.
  • Prepping the Southwood well lot for the materials storage piles that will be relocated there permanently from the Municipal Service Center site.
  • Performed maintenance on well lots, lift stations, fire hydrants and the water distribution and wastewater collection system.

Drainage Crews:

  • Inspected storm sewer lines for blockages prior to the camera inspection project.
  • Poured a concrete apron around the whye inlet at Southwood well lot, and installed a gabion mattress to prevent erosion.
  • Relocated material bins to the Southwood Well lot site.

PARKS DEPARTMENT

Last week was the fourth week of Kids Kamp at Briarhill Middle School. The field trips this week included skating, movie, and Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

The Highland Village Senior All Stars met last Monday (25 attendees) and Thursday (48 attendees) for game day.

On Monday evening June 29,  Rhoda, Tommy, and Fince met with the Park Board and ITSC members to tour Doubletree Ranch.

Parks staff has aerated, fertilized and top dressed Unity Park in preparation for the Fall soccer and baseball season.

On Thursday, Parks staff attended a Highland Village Days Red, White and Blue debriefing meeting.

Parks crews have been performing routine maintenance on all parks.

Rhoda Savage attended the DFW area Parks and Recreation Director's group meeting on Friday.

This is the fifth week of Kids Kamp at Briarhill Middle School. The field trips this week included Lunar Golf, Going Bonkers, Owens Farm and swimming.

The Highland Village Senior All Stars met on Monday (27 attendees) and Thursday (27 attendees) for game day.

Four Senior All Stars met on Tuesday for social time and games.

On Wednesday, 11 Highland Village Senior All Stars took a trip to Dallas Farmers Market and to American Airlines Center for a tour.

Forty Senior All Stars met for dinner and for a play at the Lewisville Community theatre Thursday evening.

 HUMAN RESOURCES / STAFF TRAINING

Human Resources:

  • Martha Butz attended the 2009 Annual SHRM Conference in New Orleans last week. The focus this year was "Leadership in the New Economy." The former CEO of General Electric was a keynote speaker and a Good Morning America correspondent moderated discussion.
  • As part of promoting wellness the Walk Across Texas kick off luncheon was held this Wednesday. We have forty employees participating in this program. Five teams of eight employees will compete for eight weeks to see who can walk the most miles. Logging miles starts on Monday, July 13th and ends Tuesday, September 8th. The five team captains, Lori Wright, Nancy Sharp, Jannie Baughman, Jane Ponder and Andra Boxberger, will log the miles. Good luck everyone!
  • The employee Benefit Committee met on Thursday to discuss benefits for the upcoming budget year. The committee members will gather feedback from each of their departments on desirable plan options.
  • Martha Butz attended the North Texas Municipal Alliance board meeting in Keller on Thursday.

Police:

  • Please congratulate Sergeant Pittinger on a great showing at the 2009 Police Games. Sergeant Pittinger won 2 silvers and a bronze...Outstanding!

CITY MANAGER / CITY COUNCIL

Mayor Costa and Council Members Davis and Meek attended a Town Hall Meeting hosted by Congressman Burgess on Saturday, June 27th in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Complex.

Monday morning, June 29th, a tour of the city's public works facilities was held for newly elected Council Members Wilcox, Davis and Meek.

Mayor Costa, Mayor Pro Tem Combs and Council Members Wilcox and Meek attended a Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) Breakfast in Honor of Newly Elected Council Members in Highland Village and Lewisville on Friday morning.
