Back To News

At the January 8 meeting, Council approved a resolution to publish notice of intent to issue certificates of obligation for 4B projects and utility improvements. Certificates of Obligation will be issued in the amount of $3M for the construction of Victoria, Market and Village Park Trails of the Inland Trail system. These funds will come from the approved 4B sales tax. Also $1.5M will be issued for utility capital improvements, which will come from the Utility Fund. Council will consider the second notice of intent to issue certificates of obligation on January 22 and then consider the ordinance to issue the certificates of obligation on February 12.

Also during this meeting the Highland Village Senior All-Stars Pat Brown presented a U.S. Flag to the Mayor. This summer the Senior All-Stars sent 70 care packages to ten different troops in Iraq. Jonathan Tucker responded to the care package by sending a U.S. flag that flew in Baghdad in honor of the Senior All Stars. “We feel it is a great honor to receive this flag and will proudly display it in the interim Senior Center,” stated Senior All Star Pat Brown. Jonathan Tucker and his family were in attendance to present the flag to the City of Highland Village Senior All Stars. Pat Brown welcomed Jonathan Tucker home and said, “Thank you for honoring us with this flag and for fighting for our freedoms.”

Mayor Costa also announced the Denton County Fallen Soldier Memorial will be on display in the Municipal Complex rotunda on January 16 until January 25. The traveling Memorial was created by Vietnam veterans Dee Cork and Monty Slough to honor Denton County soldiers who have been killed in action since 2004. A tribute to Pvt. Aaron M. Hudson of Highland Village who was killed on April 16, 2005 is included on the wall.

During the City Manager Report, Michael Leavitt introduced the City’s first Assistant Fire Chief, Jason Collier. Jason Collier started his career in 1985 with the Allen Fire Department and in 1989 joined the University Park Fire Department. There he rose through the ranks to Division Chief over Fire Prevention.  In 1998 he left University Park to be the Deputy Chief with Lake Cities Fire Department and in 2001 accepted the Chief’s position. “We are pleased to add such a talented member to our Fire Department team,” stated Michael Leavitt, “we believe great things are on the horizon for the Fire Department.”

Mr. Leavitt also notified residents of the Father & Daughter Valentine Dance scheduled for Friday, February 8 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Celebrations. Dance includes dinner, a flower, door prizes and a great time for dads and daughters. Tickets are on sale now for residents for $18.00 per person. Non-residents can purchase tickets after January 18 for $21.00 per person. No phone registration is accepted and no tickets will be sold at the event.
