Council Toured New Fire Station

Back To News

At the April 8 meeting, Council toured the new Fire Station located at 1200 Highland Village Road. A grand opening for the station is scheduled on May 1 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Council discussed an ordinance prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile telephones in active school zones. The Police Department conducted a survey of mobile phone use in Highland Village school zones and found usage at approximately 10%. Using hand-held cell phones in active school zones is a distraction while driving. School zones demand the constant attention of the driver in order to ensure the safety of children, pedestrians and bicyclists. Council voted to postpone consideration of the ordinance until the April 22 meeting to allow staff to provide more information regarding the fine structure for non-compliance.

During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt informed residents of the Spring Clean Up scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Copperas Branch Park. The Clean Up includes lawn and yard clippings, hazardous waste, electronic waste and paper shredding. Detailed information is available on the city web site.
