At the April 12 meeting, Council, by a vote of 4-2, approved the second and final read of an ordinance providing for smoke free workplaces in Highland Village. The ordinance prohibits smoking in any enclosed facility within all places of employment and any area available and used by the general public. Smoking is not prohibited in outdoor patio areas of businesses. Council provided a June 1, 2011 effective date for this ordinance.
Also at this meeting, Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute an interlocal agreement with Denton County for design services, installation, and construction of landscaping for medians and roadway intersection lighting on FM 2499 from FM 407 north to the Highland Village city limits. The project consists of landscape enhancements, drainage improvements, lighting, aesthetic improvement and additional safety-screening walls by the Texas Department of Transportation in five locations. Denton County will contribute $1,000,000 to the project, to be reimbursed to the city at the completion of the project.
During Mayor and Council comments, Mayor Scott McDearmont announced the Police Departments new program “Stand Up” Against Bullying, which supports the efforts of the Lewisville School District to combat the problem of “Bullying” in our schools. Highland Village Police Department’s Education/Awareness program is designed to reinforce LISD efforts and further minimize the effects of this kind of crippling behavior. The HVPD message will be focused on reversing and preventing these activities from ever occurring by actively and visibly gaining the condemnation of "Bullying" by our community, through our elected officials, parents, school administrators, teachers and most importantly our students.
“I appreciate our Police Department’s commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to stand up against bullying. We must be good examples for our children and let them know this behavior will not be tolerated in our community,” stated Mayor Scott McDearmont
