State-Wide Awards Won for Superior Communication Programs

Back To News

Denton County, Texas - The Southeast Denton County cities of Flower Mound, Highland Village, and Lewisville received six total awards in the 2008 Tami Awards program, presented June 13 by the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) at the group's annual conference in San Antonio.

Designed to highlight exceptional governmental communication programs, the Tami Awards program was started in 2002 as a way to recognize outstanding communications efforts by Texas cities, counties, and related local government agencies. This year's awards program drew 191 entries from 46 agencies statewide, with awards presented in 21 divisions.

Flower Mound's video annual report "Progress In Motion" was cited as an outstanding special or one-time program, and the town's bi-monthly cable TV news program "The FMTV Update" was recognized as a finalist for exceptional achievement in regular or recurring programming.

Highland Village's state of the city video "We Have it All" was awarded the second place Silver Star award in the special or one-time program category for cities under 95,000 in population. Judges cited the video as an effective tool to convey important city information and applauded Mayor Dianne Costa's presentation of the material.

Lewisville received four awards, including a first-place Tami Award in Best Cable PSA for its Western Day commercial. Other awards for Lewisville were second-place nods for Best Cable PSA (Holiday at the Hall commercial) and Best Special Publication (Tourism Rack Cards), and a third-place honor for Best Special Event (2007 Holiday at the Hall festival).

TAMIO formed in 1974 as a result of the increasingly complex role of public information in municipal government. At the time, only a handful of Texas cities employed professional communications staffs. Today, TAMIO is an affiliate organization of the Texas Municipal League, and has a growing number of public information professionals serving Texas communities both large and small. Members include more than 170 information officers, marketers, Webmasters, cable producers and editors and event planners representing cities, counties, other local governmental agencies, and businesses related to government communications.
