Residency of Sex Offenders Prohibited Within Certain Areas of the City

Back To News

At the March 11 meeting, Council approved the second and final read of an ordinance prohibiting residency of sex offenders within certain areas of the city. Currently all neighboring cities have an ordinance in place restricting residency of sex offenders within the city. This ordinance restricts registered sex offenders from residing within 1500 feet of where youth commonly gather. Common gathering points include city parks and trails, schools, day care center, arcades, playgrounds, public and semi-public swimming pools and public and non-profit recreational facilities.

Council approved the site plan for Majestic Fine Wine and Spirits to be located at 2140 FM 407. The site is part of the Valley Ridge Village Planned Development that was approved in 1997 and amended in 2004. The site plan was approved with the verification that Majestic is the only alcohol use for off-premise consumption allowed in the Planned Development as stated in the ordinance.

The city’s current contract for solid waste services with Waste Management expires in June and the city has received bids from four different vendors. During the early work session, Council received presentations from three of the four vendors for the city’s solid waste services contract. Council approved a resolution directing the city manager to begin contract negotiations with Waste Management for the city’s solid waste services to include an enhanced recycling program.

Also at this meeting Council approved two resolutions associated with the voter approved 4B ½ cent sales tax designated for the Inland Trail system and a soccer complex. A resolution was approved awarding the bid for construction of Victoria Trail, Market Trail and Village Park Trail to Pipeworks Construction. These three segments of the Inland Trail system will connect the southeast and southwest portions of the city to City Trail. A resolution was also passed awarding the bid for construction of a practice soccer field to Hydromulch Services. The practice soccer field will be constructed on LISD property at the corner of Harlington Road and Chinn Chapel.

During the City Manager report, Michael Leavitt invited residents to attend the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Unity Park on Saturday March 15 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
