The Texas Department of Transportation has informed the City that their contractor is in the process of installing the conduit for the traffic signal at FM 2499 and Highland Shores/Castlewood. They expect delivery of the poles and signal heads in the next two weeks. Complete operation of the signal will begin after those are installed and the traffic controller delivered and programmed.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

 

Congressman Michael Burgess gave a presentation at the City Council meeting for the deed transfer of 707 Highland Village Road. The property was seized by the federal government as part of a case involving racketeering, obscenity, fraud and income tax evasion in 2004. The City applied for a deed transfer through the Federal Equitable Sharing program. After a year of letters and inquires, the City enlisted the help of Congressman Michael Burgess and his staff. Congressman Burgess' office directed the City through the process to obtain this property.  The residential property located at 707 Highland Village Road will be used by the city for park and recreation purposes. The property includes frontage to Lewisville Lake and is adjacent on both sides to US Army Corps of Engineers property.

On Wednesday, Captain Chip Willis met with Laurie Mullens regarding the process of placing Fire Department information on the City Cable channel, HVTV. 

Captain Travis Nokes, Driver Operator Tony Sorsby, FF/Paramedic Stanton Halfmann were on-site during the DEA helicopter landing at Heritage Elementary School on Tuesday. 

Police:

This week, the police department responded to 168 calls for service, made 125 traffic contacts, made 9 arrests, responded to 2 traffic accidents and performed 466 community policing activities.

Corporal April Roppolo assisted with the Highland Village Rotary Cancer Fund Raiser on Friday Oct 22, 2010. It was a great success and they raised closed to twenty thousand dollars. They are hoping that next year the event can be held in Highland Village. One Rangers shirt (Oliver) brought in $750 and the hat April was wearing went for $40.

The DEA landed their helicopter at Heritage this week. Corporal Patrick Finley and Officer J McCally were there to assist in the landing, Sergeant Dennis Oliver assisted Corporal Roppolo during the landing and the takeoff for Red Ribbon week.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) held a class to cover current heroin issues in the area and what the various varieties of the drug look like to help in identification. The class was held at the Police Department and all of the officers attended.

Corporal Patrick Finley and Officer J McCally conducted a station tour for several scouts.

In the lunchroom Corporal Patrick Finley, Officer J McCally, Corporal David Harney, and Corporal Doug Bell assisted Corporal April Roppolo and Officer Patty talk about Drug Awareness  to six hundred and thirty from 10:30am till 1:30pm. They also enjoyed looking at the police car and all were given police goody bags.  We addressed Halloween Safety concerns and Officer Patty was a big hit with the students.

Highland Village Police Recipient of 2010 Webber Seavey Semi-Finalist Award

On October 25, 2010 the Highland Village Police Department was a 2010 Webber Seavey Semi-Finalist Award recipient at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) annual conference in Orlando, Florida. HVPD was recognized for its Police Involving Parents (PIP) Community Policing Program.  Jointly sponsored by IACP and Motorola, the Webber Seavey Award is presented annually to agencies and departments worldwide in recognition for promoting a standard of excellence that exemplifies law enforcement's contribution and dedication to the quality of life in local communities. This program helps law enforcement agencies worldwide and the communities they serve by redefining the concept of law enforcement and how it is routinely performed. The award is named for Webber S. Seavey, the IACP's first president. The program annually honors achievements in one or more of the following goals:

  • Continually improving services to the community;
  • Strengthening police relations and promoting community participation;
  • Effectively using resources;
  • Enhancing communications within and cooperation among agencies;
  • Developing creative and innovative approaches that promote excellence in law enforcement.

Sergeant Sheri Morrison was appointed to the position of Editor for the quarterly newsletter for the Texas Association of Property and Evidence Inventory Technicians. Sheri previously served as a board member for two years for the association.

HUMAN RESOURCES / STAFF TRAINING

Human Resources:

  • Martha Butz, Vanesa Childers and Dottie Palumbo attended the Board of Ethics meeting on Monday night.  New members were introduced and received an overview of the responsibilities and duties of the Board.
  • On Tuesday, Safety Committee members David Clark, Charles Mitchell, Tommy White, Sam Smith, and liaison Jana Onstead met to establish upcoming safety meeting topics.
  • Martha Butz and Jana Onstead met with Higginbotham & Associates to discuss wellness initiatives for employees.

Police:

  • Detective Andrea Musick King and her husband Mark proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Makayla Jordan King at 6lbs and 20" long. Congrats to Andrea and Mark!
  • Officer Melinda Zehetner and her husband Jim proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Josey Marie, at 7lbs 13 ounces and 20 3/4" long. Congrats to Melinda and Jim!
