GIS
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) section was started in 2002 and is part of the Public Works Department. GIS was brought to the city to provide the growing population of Highland Village with an efficient method of collecting, editing, analyzing, storing, and displaying political, geographical, demographic, and digital data. With this shared electronic database, city departments and the general public now have access to printed map products and general city data either free of charge or for a nominal fee.
While the GIS section continues to function as a "map shop," the focus of GIS has shifted from the collection and editing of data, to more applications driven needs such as asset management. Through technology, education and training, the GIS section serves as a clearinghouse of information for the City of Highland Village. Other city departments and the public can use GIS resources to assist in evaluating current issues, such as economic development, public health and safety, utility infrastructure and environmental quality.
