Fire Safety & Prevention

Fire Escape Plan

Do you and your family have a route planned in the event of an emergency, such as a fire? Many families are unprepared for such a crisis. The Highland Village Fire Department is committed to assisting families with survival during a fire. Here are some suggestions:

Escape tips:

Carbon Monoxide Detector

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of the fossil fuels - gas, oil, coal and wood used in boilers, engines, oil burners, gas fires, water heaters, solid fuel appliances and open fires.

Dangerous amounts of CO can accumulate when as a result of poor installation, poor maintenance or failure or damage to an appliance in service, the fuel is not burned properly, or when rooms are poorly ventilated and the Carbon Monoxide is unable to escape.

Having no smell, taste or color, in today's world of improved insulation and double glazing it has become increasingly important to have good ventilation, maintain all appliances regularly and to have absolutely reliable detector alarms installed giving both a visual and audible immediately there is a build up of CO to dangerous levels.

Where do I install my carbon monoxide detector?

Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide sinks to the floor. Therefore, detectors should be installed at the lowest possible portion of the house. Many CO detectors are being manufactured to plug into wall outlets to help ease installation and placement.

Smoke Detectors

I have recently purchased three smoke detectors for my home. Will the Fire Department help me install them in the correct locations?

Yes, the correct placement of smoke detectors is vital to proper functioning. The Fire Department will be happy to make recommendations and assist you in the installation of your smoke detectors. For assistance please call 972-317-0890.

How many do I need?

Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home and near or inside sleeping areas. Don't install alarms in kitchens, bathrooms, or garages - places that tend to accumulate smoke and will set off nuisance alarms unnecessarily.

Where do I install my smoke alarms?

Smoke rises, so be sure to place alarms high on the wall or on the ceiling to achieve the best source for detection. Also in stairways where smoke would travel upwards. Do not mount alarms near windows, by doors, or a forced-air register.
