Emergency Response Kit

What is an "Emergency Response Kit"?

An Emergency Response Kit is a collection of basic items a family would probably need to stay safe and be more comfortable during and after a disaster.  Items should be stored in a portable container as close as possible to the exit door.  Review the contents of your kit at least once per year or as your family needs change.  Also, consider having emergency supplies in each vehicle and at your place of employment.

What should I have in my "Emergency Response Kit"?

Some items to consider are:

  • Portable, battery-powered radio or television and extra batteries.
  • Flashlight, lanterns and extra batteries.
  • First aid kit and manual.
  • Sanitation and hygiene items (moist towelettes and toilet paper).
  • Matches and waterproof container.
  • Whistle.
  • Extra clothing.
  • Kitchen accessories and cooking utensils, including a can opener.
  • Photocopies of credit and identification cards.
  • Cash and coins.
  • Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens solutions, and hearing aid batteries.
  • Items for infants, such as formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers.
  • Tools, pet supplies, and other items to meet your unique family needs.
  • Three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Three-day supply of water - one gallon of water per person, per day.
