Election Information

The Denton County Election Office will conduct the November 4, 2008 General Election. Click here for more information including polling locations and times, absentee ballots and election day locations and times. 

The City Secretary's Office is responsible for conducting municipal elections as prescribed by the Election Code of the State of Texas.

The Mayor (Place 1) and Council members in Place 2, 4, and 6 shall be elected at the general election in even-numbered years and Council members in Places 3, 5, and 7 in odd-numbered years.  All members of the Council shall be elected under the place system, at large for two (2) year terms.  No person shall serve for more than four consecutive terms as Council member and Mayor (combined), with no more than three consecutive terms in any single position.  Each member of Council shall be a citizen of the City for a period of twelve (12) months, and a qualified voter of the State of Texas.   


Election Day, Early Voting and Location 

The general election is held on the second Saturday in May.  The polling place for early voting and Election Day will be at the Highland Village Municipal Complex, 1000 Highland Village Road.  The hours of the polling place on Election Day will be 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

Citizens are encouraged to bring their voter registration cards with them to the polling location. To determine if you are registered to vote in Denton County please click here. You should have received your new voter registration card (orange), which replaces the yellow registration card that expired on December 31, 2007. Early Voting by Personal Appearance 

First day for early voting by personal appearance begins the 12th day before the election and the last day of regular early voting by personal appearance concludes on the 4th day before the election.  The hours of the polling place during early voting are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with extended hours of 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. for the last two days early voting.

Vote Early by Mail

A registered voter is eligible for early voting by mail if the voter meets at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Out of the county
    The voter will be out of the county of the voter’s residence on Election Day and during the hours of voting at the main early voting polling place during the part of the period for early voting by personal appearance remaining after the voter’s early voting ballot application is submitted to the city secretary. If the voter does not submit the application before early voting by personal appearance begins, the voter is ineligible for early voting by mail unless the voter is absent from the county when the application is submitted.
  2. Disability
    The voter has an illness or physical condition that prevents the voter from appearing at the polling place on Election Day
  3. Age
    The voter is 65 years of age or older on Election Day
  4. Confinement in jail
    The voter is confined in jail at the time the application is submitted:
    • serving a misdemeanor sentence for a term that ends on or after election day;
    • pending trial after denial of bail;
    • without bail pending an appeal of a felony conviction; or
    • pending trial or appeal on a bailable offense for which release on bail before Election Day is unlikely.
