Code Enforcement works with citizens to resolve issues, which impact the quality of life in Highland Village. It is Code Enforcement’s goal to help neighbors resolve problems.

As a general rule, most complaints about a neighbor’s property can be addressed by Code Enforcement. The majority of these complaints are known as public nuisances and are described in the Highland Village City Code. Some common nuisances include:

Some items that may be thought of as a Code Enforcement issue, but are not a violation, and cannot be enforced include:

The code enforcement process is typically initiated in several ways:

If a violation of city code can be seen from a public place, the Code Enforcement office will take all steps necessary to abate the violation. If a city code violation cannot be seen from a public place, you must be willing to allow the Code Enforcement Officer to view the problem from your property. You may be asked to sign a complaint and appear in court if willing compliance is not achieved.

Before complaints are called into the Code Enforcement office, it is preferred that neighbors resolve their problems first. This reduces resentment neighbors might feel as a result of being turned in and having to deal with a city official.

Code Enforcement will accept anonymous complaints. However, better results in public hearings and the courts will be achieved if the complainants can be contacted, and are willing to come forward and testify if needed.
