Alarm Permits

City Ordinance 02-895 requires owners of active alarm systems to register their alarm system with the Highland Village Police Department and pay a thirty-dollar ($30) permit registration fee  of each year.

An ACTIVE ALARM SYSTEM is defined as a device or system that emits, transmits or relays a signal intended to summon or that would reasonably be expected to summon, fire or police services of the city, including, but not limited to, local alarms.

Active alarm systems do not include:  An alarm installed on a motor vehicle; An alarm system designed solely to alert the occupants of a building or residence which will not emit a signal either audible or visible from outside the building or residence; An alarm system that has been disabled and does not have the ability to send an alarm notification to fire or police personnel.

HOW TO REDUCE FALSE ALARMS

You can reduce the chances for experiencing false alarms by remembering the following:

ALARM STATISTICS

Since the inception of the false alarm ordinance, false alarm calls have gone down quite substantially.  Each alarm call is responded to by at least two Highland Village police officers.  Officers typically spend half an hour at the location checking the home/business to ensure that there are no signs of criminal activity.

The rise in the number of false alarm calls in the past had meant a decrease in the amount of time our officers were able to patrol neighborhoods looking for criminal activity.  The effectiveness of the ordinance and permitting process has proved very valuable to our citizens and our department.
